We as FJWC members (hundreds of mothers and their middle and high school students) participate in a wide variety of civic, social, and philanthropic activities to promote the spirit of volunteerism in our local community. For more than 50 years FJWC has promoted personal growth in, and has developed leadership among, our adult and student members.
We choose to serve seven local charities. Our goal is to spark an interest in each of our members to start volunteering more and then have them remain committed to philanthropy at every stage of life.
Volunteering for FJWC gives students a meaningful and enjoyable way to learn to serve others alongside their friends and classmates. Student groups are set up to emphasize volunteerism at every age, starting with exposure to our philanthropies in middle school (with no volunteer hour requirements for middle schoolers) and graduating to leadership roles within Work Crew and Juniorettes in high school (12 volunteer hours are required for high schoolers each year). Students may also have some meetings and scheduled events throughout the year. We are extremely flexible, fun, and want to promote service to our students! As an adult member, your yearly service hour requirements are determined by your membership type, and you may fulfill these hours in the following ways: by volunteering service directly to any or all of our seven charities, by taking leadership roles within our organization, and/or by making monetary donations to our charities. (Maximum yearly donation for Actives is $225 = 9 service hours.)
Whether we are packing food bags for hungry students alongside Bayou City Blessings in a Backpack, helping work booths at SBISD elementary school carnivals, sorting items for the MAM resale shop, or mentoring and tutoring kids after school at Family Point Resources, our organization provides ample opportunities to serve the community in different ways as part of a group and/or individually, and helps foster volunteerism for both students and their moms – often alongside each other.
We hold really fun, casual monthly meetings for the moms (usually held the first Tuesday of the month) with informative guest speakers and lots of laughter. Meetings are a great time to visit as well as meet other women in the community. Just a few of the speakers we have hosted in the past include travel agents, organizational experts, college advisors, and dermatologists. Our hope is that you walk out of every meeting smiling with new knowledge that will help make your life easier and more enjoyable. We host two luncheons for members every year that you won’t want to miss, one during the holidays in December and the other in the spring (usually May) to celebrate our new members. Our only fundraiser is our yearly Auction, another event you definitely don’t want to miss! All Auction net proceeds fund the charities we support as well as provide scholarships for graduating seniors.
